“American-made EL34.”
Power pentode delivering up to 25W in pentode, UL, or triode mode
The 6CA7 in its original form is a true beam tetrode variant of the EL34 pinout, as manufactured by GE and Sylvania, distinct from the European EL34 which is a pentode. The American 6CA7 has a fat-bottle construction and a sound character that is tighter and more controlled than a typical EL34, with better bass definition and a less prominent midrange. This makes the 6CA7 a subtle but meaningful alternative in amplifiers wired for EL34s, nudging the voicing slightly toward the American 6L6 character while maintaining EL34 pin compatibility. The distinction between 6CA7 (beam tetrode) and EL34 (pentode) has been blurred by modern manufacturers who use the designations interchangeably, so checking the internal construction is the only reliable way to determine type.
